Wanderers
Any character that comes from another canon, whether that be television, movie, comics, book, or an original universe of the players creation is considered a wanderer in this world once they fall through a Rift. A Rift is a break in time and space that allows for people, things, objects, and disasters to fall through into this universe. Rifts are rarely permanent in location within the city. They tend to disappear shortly after someone falls through it, which is a good thing given trying to go back through a Rift rips a person to shreds literally. There are a few places in the city where permanent Rifts are located (one in a warehouse downtown, another in the basement of the Kashtta Tower), but most people will fall through anywhere in the city from one of those temporary Rifts.
Angels and demons can identify wanderers, but all others will assume they are native citizens of this world. The mundane humans in this world are completely unaware of the supernatural part of it. The Rifts especially can act as a type of perception filter that helps people to explain the unexplainable away when it comes to the supernatural occurrences that frequently happen in the city.
While wanderers are not forced to stay in Chicago, it is the safest place for wanderers to be and the height of activity when it comes to Rifts and advancements in supernatural ideas and theories than anywhere else in the world. In other parts of the world, a wanderer could be killed on sight or taken by the groups who are in control of those locations and hate wanderers. There is no place in the world that is as accepting of wanderers than in Chicago thanks to Brando, a First Angel who provided the first sanctuary for wanderers with the Conrad hotel that has since been destroyed.
After their first night of sleep, wanderers will find that their journal that connects them to the supernatural world appear by their bedside like supernatural, angels, and demons will find their journals once they have their abilities/have become the supernatural beings they are. Once a wanderer falls through a Rift, they are automatically a part of this supernatural world whether their Rift change is a super power or a change in eye color.
Rift Change
Going through the Rift changes you. It changes everyone and everything that falls through it in some way. Sometimes it is in a big way, sometimes it is in a much smaller way. However, there is no exception to this rule. Note, it's considered a change instead of power or ability, because the change does not necessarily have to be a power or ability of any kind although both of those options are very possible.
The Rift could change them in a similar way as it does to create native supernatural humans, giving them the ability to change into an animal or to have the power to manipulate an element, but it can also change them in other ways. It can alter their physical appearance. The Rift can make them a psychic, give them excellent aim, or make them amazing at chess. The change can be something silly like having romantic music that erupts when one walks tries to flirt or giving them an endless carton of ice cream. It can also be more serious like something that could help them deal with issues they have or at least make them face it in some way.
Often, it takes time to discover the rift change, but the abilities given especially supernatural ones take time to control and can be triggered by the individual feeling intense emotion of any kind.
Locations
At the moment, there are two major locations for wanderers to stay at.
There's the Kashtta Tower. Martha Jones is in charge of it. It's a very large Tower with dorm-like rooms available for people to live in for free. Each room comes with a bed, dresser, desk, small shelving units, and bathroom. In addition, there are several lounges spread throughout these rooms that have TVs, dvd players, fire places, and couches along with shelves filled with books and magazines. There are two cafeterias as well tat are stocked with foods and supply closets that carry clothes for whoever needs any.
The Tower also has a clinic in it as well as conference rooms used for meeting purposes along with an auditorium. In the second floor, there's a hall considered the Silent Hill hall which... can basically bring out a person's subconscious and darkness into the hall with them in the form of a dark shadow. There are signs that say Keep Out for a reason. There's also a large library at the end of the hallway of dorm rooms along with a ballroom attached to the side. This library has any book imaginable from any universe in it about all kinds of information, and it magically appeared one day. In the basement, there's a Rift that is virtually inactive, but still there The second floor holds the offices of Martha Jones, Phil Coulson, Wes Gannon, and the other people who help run either the Tower or groups of their own from within it.
There's also the Sanctuary, which was built and is run by Helen Magnus that some wanderers stay at. It has a much different type of style than the Tower's more business-y building front. There are rooms of similar style along with Helen's office and more restricted rooms toward the back of the building.
It also offers sanctuary and a place to stay for anyone who should need it including wanderers. Both of these places are incredibly well protected by state of the art technology as well as magic, and they are hubs for supernatural and especially wanderer related activity so many will frequent them or stay living in them even if they have later gathered enough money to move out on their own.
Wanderers can also get jobs and save their money up to get places of their own. There are plenty of apartments, brownstones, and houses around the city which could offer a very nice place for anyone to stay.
Employment
Wanderers do not legally exist in this city so in order to get a job or go to school, they need to get forged documentation. There are plenty of people who would point a wanderer to the Crowbar (a bar that is more than a bar with people who know information within the city) to get those forged documentation. With forged information, there are hundreds of jobs within the city that open up to a wanderer.
However, there's also jobs within the Tower itself. There is a hunter group, research group, the clinic, supernatural event planning committee. They don't pay very much, but they are all available without forged documentation needed. The hunter group goes on regular patrols to take care of any monsters that might be nearby. The research group reads through books and do research to try to come up with any helpful information. The clinic will hire doctors, nurses, or people with medical experience. Finally, the supernatural event planning committee plans events that
There's additional employment at the At the End of Times website, which is the website that holds all the supernatural information.
CLF
The CLF stands for Chicago Liberation Front. They are a group in Chicago who hate wanderers and believe wanderers are the cause for everything terrible that is happening in the city. They think killing all the wanderers will stop the disasters and the deaths. As such, they have made it their mission to eradicate these wanderers. There have been multiple incarnations of the group Each group has different methods that have included bullying, torture, riots, rallies, murder, crucifixion, bombs, and threatening journal entries as well as video. They have periods where they go quiet followed by periods where they are very loud.
Here is an IC Journal entry discussing what the CLF is and some of their history.
What Can A Wanderer Know
It is very possible that when your wanderer got their welcome wagon, they may not have received all this information. However, they can easily find out any of the basic information listed here and listed in the pages about angels, demons, and supernaturals. Everything that is completely vital for wanderers to know is up on bulletin boards, in pamphlets, and at the At the End of Times website, which is advertised everywhere wanderers are most likely to be along with in the pamphlets entitled 'So A Rift Spit You Out'. The information related to angels, demons, supernaturals, and the supernatural world itself can be found by reading through books about, but there are multiple volumes of books on the subject in the library. Not all of the information in the books will be completely correct in its details, but the basics are there. They can also read back in their supernatural-network connected journal up to a year to see what's been happening in the city.
So feel free to have your characters know any of this basic information about the major threats in the world from monsters to CLF, about employment options, about location options, about Rift Changes, and about the supernatural part of the world that you'd like if they're the type who would read around.
