Demons

Demons have been around since the beginning of this universe. They were created in essence to do evil while angels were created to do good. The two together were supposed to create balance within the world filled with mundane humans.

However, things aren't always so simple, so black and white especially in this universe. Demons are completely human until they turn sixteen years old, and this time spent without the Calling to influence their actions can mean all the difference. They become a fully developed person with their own wants, desires, strengths and weaknesses before the shift comes, and many demons hate their Callings and don't feel like they should be demons at all. Others embrace these Callings.

Several will try to deny what their Calling wants them to do, but that will eventually lead to insanity. Others will lose themselves to their Calling, which means a loss of their human self, of who they are beyond the demon with the Calling. It's a struggle fighting against the voice and the inherent need inside of them to do what their Calling compels them to do, and there's rarely any choice when it comes down to it.

All Callings can easily lead to insanity or an early death by giving in too much or not giving in enough. It's the Callings that (directly or indirectly) cause the most deaths in both angels and demons.

While other major cities have strong angel or demon presence, Chicago is free from either demon or angel ownership. A treaty made in 2008 at a ball between a First and a Neq'ael is supposed to keep the city free from violence without cause between angels and demons.

Physiology and Powers

Someone can become a demon if at least one of their biological parents is a demon. If both parents are demons, it is certain they will become one too. If only one parent is a demon, there's only a 50% chance of this happening. Callings are not completely tied to heredity, however. Frequently, life experiences or personality can play big factors in what Calling a demon receives.

Demons are human until they turn 16. At this time, their entire physiology changes, and the experience is incredibly painful and lasts a couple of days while the wings grow in through their back, their blood changes, and their whole body changes as well. From this point on, they age slower than a mundane human would.

Demons can live to be five hundred years old, but most do not because they can die as easily as humans (though diseases are generally more difficult for them to catch). They are much stronger and faster than the mundane human, and they have wings that they can hide within their backs (the only evidence of them is a scar or a tattoo there when the wings are hidden). When the wings are out, they are much stronger and faster than they are normally. The wings usually instinctively slide out when a demon is lost in their Calling, but they cannot fly with these wings. The wings can look like bird wings, insect wings, or anything.

When their blood spills, it's an oily black color. Their internal body temperature is higher than humans so they will feel hotter to the touch. They can recognize other demons, wanderers, and supernatural humans, but angel will read as ordinary human to them unless the demon has their wings out. Demons are stronger than angels but slower than them in general though this varies based on training, age, and experience. There are more demons than angels, but angels can live longer.

Callings

Neqa'el

These are the demon's version of a First angel. When they reach the age of 400 or so, a demon can become a Neqa'el, which means they are generally stronger and faster than most other demons. There are only about twenty of them in the universe at any given time, and they can tell everyone's species right down to the specific Calling they have or type that they are like First Angels. In addition, they usually have an extra psychic power that they can use. For instance, Calisto could make people feel pain with her mind. Because they are so old, they often see the world in different terms than others would. They see especially the big picture and may have a difficult time connecting to other individuals, because by this time especially, the demon nature generally takes hold, and Neqs can leave a path behind them of destruction.

Like First Angels, they are generally respected by the other demons. Even if other demons may not necessarily want to respect them, there's an instinctive sense to fear and respect someone that is a Neqa'el.

These demons are generally seen as the leaders even if they've lost their mind along the way. They command a lot of power, and many of these oldest demons control cities or areas of the world like Las Vegas. There's something very dark about them. First's have a halo that other angels can see while Neq's have a dark shadow hovering behind them that other demons can see. This is a sign that they are the oldest type of demon, and as such, they should be respected.

Most frequently, it is the rakshasa and behemoth who make it to be old enough to become the oldest deons in the world. Because they are so rare, these types of angels do require special permission to play.

Rakshasa

These demons have a Calling that leads them to need, want to kill. Some take great pleasure in how they kill, drawing out the violence and the pain for as long as they are able to. Others simply enjoy ending life whatever that might mean, how ever quickly. It's a Calling, which means many of these demons might not want to enjoy ending a life and could have conflict with who they are as opposed to what. Imagine killing someone and feeling both elation, relief (that's not yours but is) and guilt, sickness at the same time. They may end up fighting urges to kill to try to protect those around them, but the very fight within their mind will eventually result in insanity if they don't give in.

Raks are generally seen as the best fighters of all the demon types, because of their strength and their edge within battle. They have heightened fighting instincts that give them an edge, and they can be more prone to violence and anger in general. They also are very good at killing monsters. They can be ruthless especially when the Calling takes over, but their desire to kill and violent natures don't make them particularly good as soldiers especially compared to archangels for instance.

However, they are the best demons have in terms of fighters, which is why they are the ones that are used and found most frequently in what demon armies exist around the world. They're the physical threat presented against archangel armies that would otherwise wipe demons out, and their numbers help where their flaws in being soldiers let them down.

Charun

Charus are the demon equivalent of a guardian angel except instead of protecting one individual, a Charun has one individual to kill. They meet that person's gaze, and while the experience feels different for every Charun, they know immediately and instinctively that this is the person they are meant to kill. Whether they want to kill them or want more than anything to never have to take anyone's life, it doesn't matter. There is no choice in it. It's set in stone, locked them to that person in chains. They have to be the one to kill their mark. No one and nothing else can be what does it.

From this point on, charuns are essentially tied to this mark until they die as guardians are tied to their wards. They can't be too far away from them. In fact, they generally have to be in the same city as their mark, because anything else would be literally painful and set them on constant edge, never knowing if their mark might die in the wrong way. Charuns can wait and wait and hold off the kill for years at times, and some form relationships with their marks before killing them either out of pleasure or out of guilt or out of some other reason, simply always being wherever they happen to be. They can kill them slowly (through emotional torture and some enjoy that more) or quickly, but if that person dies but not at the charun's hand, it's enough to create a break in the demon's mind.

So a Charun that likes to kill their mark over a long period of time may often be found saving their mark throughout this time so that the mark doesn't die before the demon has killed them. At the same time, anything that could lead to the death of their mark at their hands, any pain is something they can feel and that causes them a certain type of pleasure whether they want to feel it or not. Imagine becoming a Charun and finding that your mark is someone that you love. Those that do not want to find who they are supposed to kill can attempt to not meet anyone's gaze for as long as they can. However, like the guardians, they will eventually be overcome by wanderlust until they start searching for the one they are meant to kill.

Behemoth

Behemoths are similar to the supernatural shapeshifters, but instead of shifting into an animal, they shift into a monster of some kind. They can shift into anything from a dragon to an imp to a siren. The possibilities are unlimited as long as it is not an animal that occurs naturally within the world. Something that could reasonably be considered a monster. Imagine being sixteen, a demon, and forcibly being shifted into a monster that could terrify you, having an endless amount of power and very little control over that power. It means the people around them could be hurt if they don't get it under control. It's people they love and that they care about.

The shifts can be triggered by strong emotions especially when it comes to a young behemoth who have much less control over their shifts and the form of the monster itself. In monster form, they will be aware and will remember what has happened, and they will also have control but those monster instincts and urges will be very powerful in this form, impossible to ignore completely. These can also be very effective demons in armies especially if they have complete control over their shifting. It offers them the intelligence and purpose specific to their demon forms while also giving them enhanced strength, speed, and whatever other abilities that the monster possesses.

However, only experienced behemoths have complete control so a younger behemoth may struggle more on the battlefield, taken over by bloodlust that leads them to being more rash, violent, and potentially attacking someone they don't mean to. It's for this reason they are not necessarily seen as completely useful on the battlefield as they could end up attacking other demons depending on how much experience and age they have and their emotional state at the time.

Glasya-Labolas

These types of demons can feel the emotions of those around them and also have the power to manipulate those emotions in others. When they are older, they can learn how to better shut out those emotions and control how much of emotions that they feel. However, in extremely emotional situations, they will not be able to resist or shut it out completely.

When they are younger especially but at any age, these emotions can overwhelm them frequently. If a demon doesn't want to manipulate other people's emotions, they have to fight with the demon (the voice, need, instinct) inside of them to not use those abilities against someone, and this fight will lead to early insanity or death if the need isn't given into within ten years of their turning sixteen. Most fall trap to manipulating emotions earlier than that whether they want to or not. The temptation is too great and constant to resist.

While younger, untrained demons can't make anyone feel an emotion that isn't already there (either within themselves or the other individual), they can increase or decrease whatever emotions are there and push someone to do something in their emotions that they wouldn't otherwise. Older glays demons who have used their abilities frequently can manipulate the emotions of groups of people or call up feelings that may not necessarily be there.

Their powers vary in effectiveness based on who they are using those powers against and on their own training, age, and experience. From easiest to hardest to affect with powers (though ages, training, calling, and abilities factor in on both sides): mundane human, supernatural humans, other demons, and angels. Psychics or other empaths would be more difficult. Glays also have some protection from other psychic-related abilities due to the nature of their own powers.

Poludnica

Poludnicas are the demon counterparts to angels of healing. These types of demons can push illnesses (both physical and of the mind) on to other people, on to individuals that they meet or on to people that they want to harm in that way. Some demons like to specialize in one area of illnesses to become supremely talented in those specific types of illnesses. Others have general and thus weaker focus over multiple types of illnesses. The focus can be influenced by the specific Calling or by the demon's own experiences in life.

The strongest, oldest poludnicas can create diseases of their own and pandemics, but the effort of doing so usually ends up killing the demon in the process. One might wonder why a demon would create a disease or cause a pandemic if it meant they would die as a result, but the Calling is incredibly strong. The desire to spread disease can overwhelm them completely. An older poludnica who rarely used their abilities or who used their abilities a lot could easily reach a breaking point. The pandemic would be a result of that breaking, and the demon would die.

Because of the toll of giving others diseases and the specific Calling itself, poludnicas often look and can be very sickly themselves. The younger demons, again, have little control, and they can accidentally get others sick if they spend a lot of time with the individual or if their control on their Calling and those abilities happens to be weaker that day.

Their powers vary in effectiveness based on who they are using those powers against and on their own training, age, and experience. From easiest to hardest to affect with powers (though ages, training, calling, and abilities factor in on both sides): mundane human, supernatural humans, other demons, and angels.

Temelechus

Temelechus demons are demons that can manipulate fears, and it is not only the emotion that they can manipulate and feel from people. While Glays can feel any emotion, temes can only sense and feel fear, and it is a trigger for many of them where they react with the overwhelming feeling of need to increase that fear or to unravel it. They are able to see what scares people the most. For young demons, this could take getting to know people very well or seeing it nearly firsthand. It can also take a complete lack of control over the demon in their head. For an older demon, they are able to search through the mind of an individual to see what scares that individual the most.

They are able to give the individual visions, to stir thoughts and feelings in them related to the fear, and shove nightmares into them even when they are not in the same space as that person. The teme can witness the nightmares from a distance once they have properly locked on to an individual. Many temes enjoy the psychological torture of it all (if they don't, the demon that's a part of them, that may feel like them does and encourages it). The intent of the Calling is to pick out a specific target, to haunt them with their fears until it drives them to the breaking point.

That's what satisfies the Calling for the demon. Without it, without doing it once, eventually, they will snap although it can be at a much older age than Glays, because their trigger is one specific emotion as opposed to all of the emotions around them at any one time.

Their powers vary in effectiveness based on who they are using those powers against and on their own training, age, and experience. From easiest to hardest to affect with powers (though ages, training, calling, and abilities factor in on both sides): mundane human, supernatural humans, other demons, and angels. Psychics or empaths would be more difficult. Temes also have some protection from other psychic-related abilities due to the nature of their own powers.

Afreet

Some demons just want to see the world burn. This particular type of demon has the power to increase their body temperature to an incredibly high amount beyond what anyone else can withstand. They can manipulate and create fire while also being immune to its flame if they are focused enough on keeping their body temperature up. The effort of all of this, however, can easily exhaust them, and many of these types of demons accidentally die in fires created by their own hand when those fires end up getting out of their own control if they have exhausted themselves and can no longer remain immune to the heat of it. These demons have a very healthy understanding and respect when it comes to fire of any kind including the kind created within explosion.

These demons, also, have an innate talent when it comes to explosions and burning buildings, structures, cities down to the ground in ash and ruin A fire created by an afreet demon can be nearly impossible to fight against for firefighters, because of their strength and their ability to make nearly anything burn. The Calling inside of themselves desires the burning and the creating of ruins and ash. When it isn't satisfied like any other Calling, it can lead to madness, and again, the older the demon gets, the more and bigger the fire and destruction takes for it to to satisfy that inherent need. It's easy for these demons to get overwhelmed by this need and lose their ability to focus enough to keep themselves alive.

The power that they have is literally inside of themselves, which makes it a very difficult struggle for them to remain in control of especially when they are very emotional. Their powers can be triggered by their own emotions at times if intense enough especially if they are young and have little control. It can also be triggered by the sight of fire itself when they are at a young age, the need to use it will hit them when the see that fire and that heat, and it becomes a fight to resist it.
