AU Application Guidelines
AU applications are difficult to process, because the standard for alternate universe characters is that they have to be different enough from the canon versions of themselves to not be the same exact character, but they have to be recognizable still as that character so the mun isn't basically playing an original character. This can be incredibly hard for the mods to gauge especially when we are unfamiliar with the canons the characters is from.
This is why the AU characters have their own application. Please, describe in great detail both throughout and in the designated section within the application the differences between the canon character and the AU version of that character. This will help the mods to make the most accurate decision regarding the application, and it is the most vital part of these AU applications.
AU applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and what we may accept for one character as an AU may not work for another. With established AUs that have already been apped into the game, unless the character you want to apply for from that same AU meets these qualifications, they will not be accepted.
General Guidelines (the apped character is referred to as Character A)
Too much like the canon character to be accepted:
-Any alternate universe where the major change happens to another character that Character A has a relationship with while Character A remains basically the same.
-Any alternate universe where one event changes in Character A's life but they remain basically the same or only have minor changes (looks left first instead of right at stop signs or hates the color blue now)
-Any alternate universe where an event in the world happens, doesn't happen, or differs, but doesn't directly and significantly change Character A's life.
Not enough like canon character to be accepted:
-Any alternate universe where the only similarity between Character A and the canon version is the name, the looks, or other small details.
-Any alternate universe where the universe completely shifts to the point that it's completely different, and the basics that made Character A who they are could not be recreated in that other setting. For instance, Character A is born and raised during the Dark Ages, having them born and raised during the modern ages instead would make it difficult to recreate what made Character A who they are in a way the character would still be recognizable as a version of canon without serious work.
We do accept: Genderbent and racebent characters as long as the mun keeps in mind and writes in the newly added section how this has changed and affected a character throughout their life. People of different genders, etc. have different societal expectations and are treated differently, and the application should account for these differences.
We also accept canon AUs, but there can only be two versions of a character at any given time so having a canon AU would take away the ability for there to be another AU of that character if that makes sense. Similarly, there can be one movie version and one comics version or one tv show version and one book version of a character at a time, but this would take away any AU versions of the characters. If you're applying for a canon!AU, please, indicate that in your application.
We accept many different types of AUs, but they should be well thought out, well described, and meet the criteria listed below (we do not want two exact copies of a character walking around nor do we want what is basically an original character taking what should be an AU spot for that character).
Examples
Harry Potter is the boy who lived/survived the killing spell, and his parents died in the attack and he was raised by his aunt and uncle who told him his parents died in a car crash. It wasn't until later that he found out what really happened and that he's a wizard.
Too close to canon
-Instead of being muggle born, Hermione (Harry's best friend) is a half blood. While this would be a significant change for Hermione and likely alter her personality some and change her struggles, this is not significant enough for Harry though it would alter some events they went through together.
-If Sirius really had killed Peter Pettigrew, this would significantly alter future events in the Harry Potter universe, but it is an event that happened without Harry's awareness of it and it is unlikely the event would have really altered who Harry was in canon.
-Gilderoy's mind is not oblivated in book 2, which would be a significant and interesting AU for Gilderoy Lockhart but it would not significantly change Harry.
Not close enough to canon
-If the Harry Potter universe was merged with the Hunger Games universe or if these characters were put into that universe, all the characters would be drastically different to the point of being unrecognizable when shaped by an apocalyptic future world where people are starved and kids are forced to kill each other for entertainment.
-Harry Potter is a lawyer living in Manhattan with his best friend, Hermione Granger.
Acceptable AUs
-Sirius is forgiven for his crimes/found innocent/never gets a hold of Peter, and he is able to raise Harry instead.
-Harry is genderbent so that he's Helen Potter, the girl who lived. The application would then focus on the differences between Helen and Harry and how growing up as a girl was different for her, how she was treated differently, along with differences in her personality, etc.
